Webinar: Innovative Strategies for Crisis Intervention for Youth with Mental Health Needs
In the United States, only about 20 percent of youth living with mental health conditions receive the treatment they need. At the same time, research shows that 70 percent of youth in the juvenile justice system have one or more psychiatric disorders, and each year, an alarming number of youth living with serious mental health treatment needs enter the juvenile justice system. Schools feel overburdened and unable to meet the needs of children, families don’t know where to look for help and law enforcement get called in a crisis.
This webinar will introduce participants to NAMI’s initiative to promote and expand the availability of Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) for Youth. CIT for Youth is a community program designed to build partnerships between advocates, schools, mental health providers, law enforcement and other local leaders committed to improving the lives of youth. Participants will learn about a new publication, Responding to Youth with Mental Health Needs: A CIT for Youth Implementation Manual and how CIT for Youth can help communities better address the needs of youth with mental needs, particularly those at risk for involvement with the juvenile justice system. The webinar will feature both national and local perspectives on the implementation of CIT for Youth.
Presenters include Dana Markey, program manager of NAMI’s Child and Adolescent Action Center and Laura Usher, program coordinator of NAMI’s CIT Center. Darcy Gruttadaro, director of NAMI’s Child and Adolescent Action Center, will moderate.
